U-Dance Team Finishes Third at National Cheer and Dance Championships
VERMILLION, S.D. -- The University of South Dakota U-Dance Team had their best competition in school history and finished third at the 2003 Chick-fil-A Cheer and Dance Collegiate Championships on April 4, at Daytona Beach, Fla.
USD's U-Dance finished third in the Dance Division II competition behind Central Oklahoma and McClennan Community College. Only one other NCC dance team finished in the top 10 - Minnesota State-Mankato, 10th. The U-Dance team, which performed at all the USD basketball games as well as other events, recorded a score of 9.11 which would have placed them seventh in the Dance Division IA competition. Division II winner Central Oklahoma had a score of 9.37 and McClennan Community College totaled 9.27 for second place.
In previous competitions, U- Dance was fourth in 2000, 13th in 2001 and 10th in 2002.
"It is very rewarding to go down there and do as well as we did," said senior team captain Elise Gosch, originally of Beresford, S.D. "After eight months of fundraising and practicing, it all comes down to two minutes and 15 seconds of competition. And, the team really came through in shiny colors," said Gosch.
The U-Dance Team, which had several costumes, including one borrowed from Sioux City East High, also saved money by doing their own choreography.
