Summit League Basketball Championships to Be Held in Sioux Falls in 2013 and 2014
Elmhurst, Ill. -- The Summit League announced on Wednesday that the 2013 and 2014 men's and women's basketball championships have been awarded to Sioux Falls, S.D. The 2012-13 season will be the first year of postseason eligiblity for the South Dakota men's and women's basketball teams.
Sioux Falls has been the host of the tournament since 2009, and will also host the 2011-12 tournaments. The tournament has been and will be continue to be held at Sioux Falls Arena, a facility that seats 6,500.
"The Summit League is excited about continuing its relationship with the city of Sioux Falls, the Sioux Falls Sports Authority, Sioux Falls Arena and our current corporate sponsors," said Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple. "We have seen a substantial commitment from everyone involved in our basketball championships starting from day one and continuing through the first three years. The record level of success our championships have achieved in Sioux Falls gives our league a solid base to build upon in the years ahead."
South Dakota is entering its fourth year of its transition to Division I status in 2011-12. All of the Coyote teams, except football, will begin Summit League regular-season play in 2011-12. All Coyote teams will be eligible for the postseason starting with the 2012-13 season with the except of outdoor track and field, which was fast-tracked and was eligible for the first time during the 2010-11 season.
