VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Rochester, Mich., for the Summit League Championships, women’s soccer hosts Kansas City for Senior Day and volleyball plays Omaha at home before travelling to Kansas City Friday this week in Coyote athletics.
Cross country participates in the Summit League Championships hosted by Oakland in Rochester, Mich., at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course. The women will start the competition at 9 a.m. CT with a 6k and the men will follow with an 8k at 10 a.m. CT. Jeff Mettler earned all-Summit League honors last season and enters this year’s meet with the fourth-best 8k time in the conference (24:52), while on the women’s side Amber Eickhorn (21:54) and Katie Wetzstein (22:25.70) have run the team’s top two 6k times.
Saturday’s home contest with Kansas City (5-9-4, 2-4-1 Summit League) is also Senior Day and the season finale for women’s soccer’s (2-12-3, 1-5-1 Summit League). The Coyotes upset North Dakota State 3-2 this past weekend behind senior Erin Bello’s four points, a season-high. Senior Rachel Greene (Onalaska, Wis.) will be playing her final game in the red and white.
Kansas City is seventh in the conference and features Taylor Bare, one of the league’s most potent strikers (five goals). Game time is 1 p.m. at the USD Soccer Complex.
USD volleyball (9-14, 3-8 Summit League) hosts Omaha (6-15, 1-8 Summit League) in the DakotaDome Monday (7 p.m.) and travels to Kansas City for a 7 p.m. matchup Friday night. It will be the first time the Coyotes have faced off with Omaha this season and their second go-round with Kansas City (L, 2-3). Kendall Kritenbrink was named the Oct. 22 Summit League Offensive Player of the Week for her 20 and 25 kill performances against Oakland and Fort Wayne. Kelsey Biltoft (Nelson, Neb.) also had an excellent weekend, posting three solo blocks and nine block assists in two games.
Omaha is in the first year of its Division I transition and is a strong serving squad, boasting three of the top-five individual Summit League leaders in aces per set. Kansas City (14-10, 7-5 Summit League) sits third in the conference behind Emily Lucas’s 3.70 kills per set.
Coyote football (1-6, 0-4 MVFC) travels to Terre Haute, Ind., for a matchup with MVFC-foe Indiana State (6-2, 4-1 MVFC). Joe Glenn’s squad will be looking for their first road win of the season. Tim Marlette had a team-high eight tackles against the Bison Saturday, the third time this season he has led the team in tackles, and also paces the Coyote defense with six tackles for loss and one blocked kicked.
The Sycamores top the MVFC standings and are led by running back Shakir Bell, who is fifth in the FCS in rushing yards per game (144.5) and Aaron Archie, the conference leader in tackles per game.
Men’s and women’s golf are on the road for their final tournaments of the fall. The men’s squad is in Hopkinsville, Ky., to compete in the F&M Bank APSU Invitational. The women are in Lakewood Ranch, Fla., for the FIU/Pat Bradley Invitational at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. After day one in Florida the girls are in 14th-place overall.
