VERMILLION, S.D.—South Dakota freshman guard
Triston Simpson came off the bench and scored a team-high 20 points and four other Coyotes reached double figures in South Dakota's 106-76 win over Loras College in exhibition action at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center Friday night.
The Coyotes have 10 new players on the roster this season and an entirely new starting lineup.
In addition to Simpson, sophomore forward
Trey Burch-Manning scored 18 points, senior center
Tyler Flack put away 16, sophomore forward
Dan Jech tallied 13 and junior guard
Trey Dickerson added 10 points.
Sophomore guard Desmond George had a game-high 23 points on 70 percent shooting with six made threes to lead the Duhawks, a Division III program from Dubuque, Iowa. Loras took off on a hot start against the Coyotes with the score tied up four times and three lead changes in the first half. Senior guard Justin Vanwambeke put up 17 points and dished out eight assists. Guard Christian Mathis added 11 points for the Duhawks.
Flack, the top returner for the Coyotes and lone senior, scored 11 of his 16 points in the first half to give the Coyotes a 47-41 lead headed into the break. He made 11-of-13 from the free throw line in the game.
The Coyotes used a 16-3 run with 5:43 remaining to pull away from the Duhawks at 99-71.
Burch-Manning made a three-point play and sank a jumper to lead the Coyotes during the run. Six Coyotes scored in the three and a half minute span. Freshman
Tyler Peterson handed out all three of his assists during the run.
Simpson, a true freshman from Lincoln, Neb., shot 5-for-7 from the field and made 4-of-5 from downtown. He was also a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Three of Burch-Manning's five assists came on Simpson buckets near the end of the first half.
The Coyotes shot 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field and 82.1 percent (32-of-39) from the line as a team. They tallied 22 assists on 32 made field goals. Burch-Manning tipped away four of the team's eight steals with all four immediately resulting in Coyote points off turnovers.
South Dakota led Loras in the paint 34-28 and in points off turnovers 24-16.
The Coyotes open the season next Friday at 8:30 p.m. at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa. South Dakota returns to the Sanford Coyote Sports Center for the second half of the grand opening double-header Nov. 13 at 3:15 p.m. against Bowling Green.
