Mooney named to Lou Henson watch list

Watch List

BOSTON  — South Dakota junior Matt Mooney has been named to the 2017-18 Lou Henson Award preseason watch list. The award is given annually to the nation's top Division I mid-major player.

Mooney returns as a first team all-Summit League honoree and the league's Transfer of the Year. He averaged 18.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as a sophomore. His 75 steals ranked 10th in the nation last year with his average of 2.21 steals per game placing him 13th in the nation.

The 6-foot-3 guard made his mark on the record books in his first season with the Coyotes, scoring the fourth-most points (634) in program history for a single season. He also tallied the fourth-most steals in a single season in program history.

The Wauconda, Illinois, native scored in double-digits over the final 22 games last season and went over 20 points in the final four games. He twice hit a career-best 30 points, against Fort Wayne in January and against South Dakota State in March.

Lou Henson coached for 41 years and when he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State and is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

The 2017-18 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced on March 31, 2018, at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship.
