Smith, Mooney earn postseason NABC recognition

NABC Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo.—South Dakota sophomore guard Matt Mooney earned first-team all-District 12 honors and head men's basketball coach Craig Smith was named District 12 Coach of the Year as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced its 2016-17 Division I All-District teams and coaches. Mooney is the first Coyote named to the team at the Division I level. Smith is the first Summit League Coach to win a District Coach of the Year honor since 2011-12.

Mooney, who hails from Wauconda, Ill., and who began his collegiate career at Air Force, was named Summit League Transfer of the Year and earned first-team all-Summit League honors. Mooney led USD and ranked third in the Summit League in scoring with an 18.6 points per game average. He started all 34 games for the Coyotes and totaled the fourth-most points in the program's single-season history (634). He was also one of the nation's steals leaders with 75, also fourth in program history.

Smith, who was also named Summit League Coach of the Year, earned the NABC District 12 award after leading the Coyotes to their first Summit League championship after being picked to finish seventh in a preseason poll of conference coaches, media and sports information directors. South Dakota won 22 games this season, the most since 2010 and the sixth-most in program history. The Coyotes had 10 newly eligible players and just five upperclassmen on the roster.

Five members from both the Summit League and Horizon League comprise the 10 players selected to the All-District 12 Team. In addition to Mooney, the Summit League was represented by South Dakota State's Mike Daum on the first team and by Fort Wayne's Mo Evans and John Konchar and North Dakota State's Paul Miller on the second team.
