Coyotes drop two in Texas

CELINA, Texas—South Dakota came up empty against a pair of 2022 NCAA tournament teams Saturday in a tournament hosted by North Texas at Old Celina Park. McNeese State beat the Coyotes 4-1 and No. 16 Kentucky won game two 9-0 in five innings.

Mia Kraimer's RBI double in the top of the fifth inning against McNeese State plated pinch runner Alexia Terrazas for South Dakota's lone run. The Coyotes mustered seven hits on the day including two each from Courtney Wilson and Gabby Moser.

Shaelyn Sanders pitched into the fifth inning for McNeese State before handing off to Lindsay Davis who allowed one walk in one trip through the USD lineup. Corine Poncho was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Cowgirls (5-2), who are the defending Southland Conference champions.

Kentucky catcher Kayla Kowalik and right fielder Taylor Ebbs drove in three runs apiece for Kentucky (4-1-1). Ebbs' bases-clearing double in the top of the first set the tone. The Wildcats used a number of bunts and infield singles while drawing seven walks to fuel their offense.

Sophomore pitcher Izzy Harrison went the distance in the circle for Kentucky. She allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked three to pick up her first win of the season. Moser and Goerke had singles and freshman Brylee Hempey drew a pair of walks in her first collegiate at bats.

South Dakota (2-4) concludes play in Texas Sunday with games against UT-Arlington (10 a.m.) and Sam Houston State (12:30 p.m.).
