Coyotes conclude California trip

SAN DIEGO, Calif.—South Dakota's two Friday opponents extracted some revenge in their rematches Saturday. Colgate won game one 2-0 and San Diego took the nightcap 6-4. The Coyotes were 3-6 out west and will enter Summit League play with an 11-15 mark.

Colgate's Alexa Acker tossed a four-hit shutout against South Dakota. She struck out six and walked three. The Coyotes loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning but Acker got Charis Black on a comebacker to get out of the jam.

Raider first baseman Kara Fusco hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to put Colgate (9-16) ahead. It was her fourth home run of the season. Pinch hitter Bailey Burns singled and came around to score on an Adrienne Nardone base hit in the top of the third.

South Dakota committed a season-high five errors in the second game against San Diego (12-18-1) and that was way too many. Two out errors in the first and second innings gifted four runs to the Toreros and they led 6-0 after thru three.

South Dakota got two back on a sacrifice fly from Courtney Wilson followed by an Aleesia Sainz base hit in the top of the fifth. Jordyn Pender's two-run double with outs in the seventh brought the tying run to the plate but San Diego pitcher Madison Earnshaw got Gabby Moser to fly out to right to end the game.

Earnshaw (5-3) went the distance for the Toreros. She allowed seven hits, struck out one and walked two. Clara Edwards pitched three innings and took the loss. Kynlee Marquez tossed three scoreless innings of relief for South Dakota.

Pender had a team-high seven hits in nine games in California to lead the Coyotes. She had two doubles and drove in four runs. Wilson and Alecea Mendoza hit a team-high .294 (5-for-17). Mendoza had a double, a triple and three RBIs.

South Dakota hosts North Dakota next weekend to open Summit League play.
