South Dakota's men's and women's cross country teams are set to take on 36 teams from 13 conferences at the NCAA Division I Midwest Regional Championships hosted by Iowa State University Friday in Ames.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The South Dakota men's cross country team finished second by the second smallest margin in Summit League history while the USD women battled through injuries to finish third at the Summit League Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Hefner Complex in Fort Wayne.
Just before Saturday's kickoff in the DakotaDome, the Summit League will have completed its first championship of the 2013-14 academic year and the accomplishments could be many for South Dakota cross country. The Coyotes were runners-up on the men's and women's side a year ago and top-two finishes are out there to get again this season. Both USD teams are regarded as one of the best assembled under head coach Dan Fitzsimmons.
2013 Ended up as a key scorer towards the end of the season after being held back by injury in the beginning...placed 12th at the Summit League meet to garner All-Summit League honors...his time of 25:31(8k) was a season-best...finished 10th at the Tim Young Invitational with a time of 25:52 (8k)...ran a time of 32:45 (10k) at the NCAA Regional to round out the Coyote scorers...named to the Summit League's Distinguished Scholar list...also named to the Academic All-Summit League team.
2012 Named Coyote Male Athlete of the Year... earned first-team all-league honors at the Summit League Championships after a second-place finish in a time of 25:10 (8k)...named Summit-League Athlete of the Week (9/18) after placing 5th at the Woody Greeno Invitational in a time of 24:58 (8k)... had two individual wins on the season at the Creighton/UNO Double Dual and the Tim Young Invitational...had a season-best 8k time of 24:52 at the Tim Young Invitational...named to Academic All-Summit League team, also earning Distinguished Scholar status.
2011 Enjoyed a breakout season and was the Coyotes' top runner at all five meets...earned All-Summit League first team honors after placing fifth at 25:15 on Oct. 29...won two meets -- the Creighton/UNO Double Dual (8K) with a time of 26:46 and 1st at the NDSU Bison Open (8K) with a time 25:09...also placed second at the Tim Young Invitational with the time 24:42...finished in the top 10 in all five meets...named to the Academic All-Summit League team, earning Distinguished Scholar status.
2010 Was named the GWC Male Freshman of the Year after finishing as the top freshman (13th overall) in 24:48 (8k) at the GWC Championships (10/30)...finished in South Dakota's top three at all six meets during the season...top finish was second at the North Dakota dual (11/13) in 26:04 (8k)...was USD's top runner at the Oz Memorial Invite (9/10) and Roy Griak Invite (9/25)...finished fifth overall at the Creighton/UNO Invite (9/4) in 27:10 (8k).
Prep Ran for Coach Kaci VanderVorst at Eureka High School...won the last two state cross country meets, after finishing eighth as a sophomore and seventh a freshman...also won the Region 4B meet three times and was a two-time conference champion and held the state meet record time for Elks Golf Course (16:41)...on the track, he helped Eureka's medley relay win the state title in 2009 while finishing third in the 1,600 meters and 3,2000 meters as an individual...at the 2010 state championships he won the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:31 and finished second in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:06...holds school records in the 800 (2:00), 1600 (4:31), 3200 (9:52) and 4x800 relay (8:17).
