A quarterback at tight end, a running back at wide receiver, an offensive lineman at fullback. All positions and personnel groupings are on the table as offensive coordinator Wesley Beschorner works to place the top 11 players on the field in each situation.
VERMILLION, S.D.--Senior linebacker Tyler Starr and sophomore quarterback Kevin Earl were among the award recipients at the 2013 University of South Dakota Football Awards Show held Saturday in the ballroom of the Muenster University Center.
2013 Started the first four games at quarterback before moving to wide receiver where he earned five more starts ... played in all 12 games ... named to the MVFC All-Academic Team ... received the Coaches Award at the end of the season ... finished as the team's second-leading passer, third-leading rusher and fifth-leading receiver ... threw two touchdowns, ran for three touchdowns and caught two touchdowns during the year ... also returned punts near the end of the season ... completed 39 of 85 passes for 394 yards ... passed for 200 yards and a score and ran for 63 yards and a score at Northern Arizona (9/21) ... had a rushing touchdown in each of the team's first three games ... had 78 yards rushing and a touchdown at Kansas (9/7) ... first touchdown reception was an 11-yard catch against Youngstown State (11/2) ... caught four passes for 59 yards and a touchdown the following week against Montana (11/9) ... 2011 Saw action in seven games under center as a redshirt freshman...Completed 22 of 38 passes for 221 yards...Tallied three touchdowns and had a 31-yard pass at Cal Poly and had his first rushing touchdown at Cal Poly...Threw his second career touchdown pass and lone touchdown of the game for the Coyotes at Wisconsin...Had 24 rushes for 72 yards...Earned team offensive player of the week honors for his efforts against Lindenwood as he went 8 of 12 for 77 yards and a score, along with seven rushes for 22 yards at the Coyotes blanked the Lions 31-0.
2010 Redshirted his first season in the USD program...named USD's Scout Offensive Player of the Week twice during the season...named USD's Offensive Scout of the Year.
Prep A four-year starter at quarterback...coached by Corey Brandt...the Class 2A Nighthawks posted a 13-1 record and didn't lose until the state finals, as Vander Maten passed for more than 2,400 yards and 29 touchdowns with just six interceptions...also notched 616 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground...efforts earned him first-team all-state and elite all-state honors from the Des Moines Register, while the Iowa Newspaper Association also gave him first-team all-state accolades...named to the all-district first team and was the district MVP as well...also a star point guard on the basketball court for Class 1A Boyden-Hull, as he earned INA first-team all-state and DMR all-state honors...Nighthawks won the district tournament to advance to the state tournament and finished the season 21-5 overall.
