    Football hands out team awards

    VERMILLION, S.D.--Senior linebacker Tyler Starr and sophomore quarterback Kevin Earl were among the award recipients at the 2013 University of South Dakota Football Awards Show held Saturday in the ballroom of the Muenster University Center.


    Vander Maten named to MVFC All-Academic Team

    VERMILLION, S.D.--South Dakota junior Josh Vander Maten was named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All-Academic Team announced Wednesday by the conference office. League sports information directors voted on the team by designating 11 players for first-team and 11 players for second-team honors.

    One of 10 Coyotes who started all 11 games, he at quarterback...honorable mention academic All-MVFC honoree...completed 151-of-268 passes for 1,662 yards...threw seven touchdowns and seven interceptions...carried a team-high 138 times for 495 yards and scored a team-high six rushing touchdowns...ranked 62nd nationally in total offense (196 ypg) and 88th in passing efficiency (111.83)...ranked seventh in the MVFC in passing yards per game (151 ypg)...scored a QB rating of 163 with a two-touchdown, 172-yard effort in the season opener at Montana (9/1)...hooked up with Terrance Terry for an 80-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half in that contest for the Coyotes' longest play from scrimmage of the season...ran for 78 yards and two touchdowns in the team's win against Colgate (9/8)...4-yard touchdown run at Northwestern accounted for the `Yotes lone score (9/22)...passed for a season-high 253 yards and three scores against Illinois State (9/29)...ran for 73 yards and two touchdowns at Missouri State (10/13)...carried 16 times for a season-high 135 yards and a score against UNI and added 205 yards and a score through the air (11/10) of five active Coyotes who carries a cumulative GPA above 3.5...MVFC Commissioner's Academic Excellence Award...MVFC Honor Roll.

    Saw action in seven games under center as a redshirt freshman...Completed 22 of 38 passes for 221 yards...Tallied three touchdowns and had a 31-yard pass at Cal Poly and had his first rushing touchdown at Cal Poly...Threw his second career touchdown pass and lone touchdown of the game for the Coyotes at Wisconsin...Had 24 rushes for 72 yards...Earned team offensive player of the week honors for his efforts against Lindenwood as he went 8 of 12 for 77 yards and a score, along with seven rushes for 22 yards at the Coyotes blanked the Lions 31-0.

    Redshirted his first season in the USD program...named USD's Scout Offensive Player of the Week twice during the season...named USD's Offensive Scout of the Year.

    A four-year starter at quarterback...coached by Corey Brandt...the Class 2A Nighthawks posted a 13-1 record and didn't lose until the state finals, as Vander Maten passed for more than 2,400 yards and 29 touchdowns with just six interceptions...also notched 616 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on the ground...efforts earned him first-team all-state and elite all-state honors from the Des Moines Register, while the Iowa Newspaper Association also gave him first-team all-state accolades...named to the all-district first team and was the district MVP as well...also a star point guard on the basketball court for Class 1A Boyden-Hull, as he earned INA first-team all-state and DMR all-state honors...Nighthawks won the district tournament to advance to the state tournament and finished the season 21-5 overall.
